One of the first festivals of the festival season, Wychwood Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse is this weekend. There will be some great acts, including Robyn Hitchcock. You might have seen him in the excellent film Rachel Getting Married. One of these days he would be great to have on this blog as a Conversation on the Train, as, amongst other things, his third album is called I Often Dream of Trains. Tickets are still available. Yippee! From Cheltenham Spa, take the bus or book a taxi – which should cost under a tenner.
You could go to lovely York this weekend to see an intriguing exhibition by Cornelia Parker, a Turner Prize nominee, Thirty Pieces of Silver. ‘Over a thousand silver objects including plates, spoons, candlesticks, trophies, cigarette cases, teapots and trombones,’ have been collected by the artist and flattened with a steamroller. ‘The squashed objects are arranged into thirty ‘pieces’ and suspended by fine wires, just off the ground so that they seem to hover.’
The work is on display at St. Mary’s Church and there are obvious religious connotations, as thirty pieces of silver was what Judas was paid for betraying Jesus.
Finally, London’s Regent Street will be host to A Taste of Spain 2011 on Sunday. The tourism board is showcasing specialities from different parts of Spain, including paella (pronounced pie-ay-a) from Valencia and horses from Menorca (every summer in Menorca’s Ciutadella there is a festival with Menorca’s indigenous horse at the centre of it all. Men ride the horses into town and the brave try and touch the horse’s hearts).
